| Business Challenge |
The corporate customer had multiple chains under different brand names. They had different IT systems for different chains, but supporting similar business models. The customer wanted
to make the systems common so that overall resource cost (human and infrastructure) can be reduced.
The customer had many systems to be made common. The most important of them was Item, the core of the retail systems.
This system helps in initializing every single merchandise in the system. This system assigns the unique identifier to the
merchandise apart from adding other attributes. Then the merchandise information gets propagated through out other applications. The Item system
monitors the complete life cycle of each individual merchandise.
The impact of the change to the Item system was very critical as it was affecting almost all other systems of the customer.

| How Globalcase Helped |
The customer turned to Globalcase because for their retail industry experience and expertise. Globalcase consultants analyzed
the existing data model and applications of different chains for initializing and tracking individual items. They found out
that it would not be possible to make all systems common at the smae time because of the number of applications and their
complexity. They proposed a solution so that the transition could be done in a phased manner. With the proposed solution the
old systems could still access the Item application using their old interface.
Globalcase team was involved in analyzing requirements for the new system as well as application interfaces, designing solution,
defining overall architecture, data modeling, development, testing and production implementation. Apart from focusing on making the Item system common, its consultants
coordinated and helped other groups. This helped in a smooth transition to new common systems.
